I’m 25, so I have little-medium life experience at this point. Today I’m here to talk style evolution and growing up, and I’d love to hear your stories and advice on this as well. When do people start dressing differently? Is it a conscious choice? Is it a slow evolution? Do people start hitting 25 and something in their brains switch on and they start dressing like an adult? Have you ever had a style change, and if so when and why do you think it happened?
For about the last 10 years I’ve had mostly the same style – all black everything, that’s kind of what happens when you’re a makeup artist as that’s the uniform most of us wear. My style in general is a bit edgy anyways, so my work wear just bled into my everyday wear pretty easily. I’ve also had a bit of a thing for skull printed items, weather it be sweaters, scarves or shoes. These have all been my staples for my wardrobe for years.
Recently I’ve felt my tastes changing, and it honestly crept up on me and took me by surprise. I noticed it when I was window shopping my fave stores online and nothing was calling out to me on any of them. Then I went out to buy some new plain t-shirts for maternity wear and to my surprise I decided to get some white ones. They’re my favourite shirts now and before this month you wouldn’t have ever seen white on me!
Another new thing for me is jeans. I grew up wearing jeans, but for years I haven’t worn or owned them. I wore black leggings instead. Right now I only have one pair of black leggings, and a few pairs of jeans. I’ve also recently been looking at different types of pants, I have my eye on a pair of black pixie pants from Old Navy right now.
All of this is new territory for me. It may not seem like a big deal, but a change in style is a change in identity and it’s an uncomfortable place to be while in transition. It’s hard when you’re not entirely sure what you’re looking to move toward, and it’s also hard when you’re plus size. There aren’t very many stores for plus size women here, and I’m not a huge fan of shopping online (although I may need to start branching out with that as well) so options are limited. I’m wondering if my style may be changing because of my age. I turned 25 in November, which isn’t “old” of course but it does feel like I’m at the point where I’m getting older. Maybe I’m just growing up! Ha.
With all that said I’m excited for a change and new beginning, and here are some outfits I’ve been loving and wanting.
Have you ever gone through a style evolution? Tell me about it in the comments!
